Basel Fasnacht(Carnival):The time I got attacked with confetti on the streets
BASEL FASNACHT :TIPS FOR SURVIVING THE SWISS CARNIVAL
Having witnessed weeks of preparation for the Basel Fasnacht and hearing people bragging about how different and grand the Basel Carnival is, I was very eager to witness the 3 day event myself. Though I missed out on attending the inauguration event at 4 am (which I plan to attend this year) , I really wanted to just stroll around the streets whenever I got off work, and experience the whole culture.
Indeed, I had acquainted myself with some of the traditions of the Carnival, the major one being:throwing confetti on people, especially those not wearing a Plakatte (metal badge) in support of the Fasnacht and the Cliques(groups). Now, several people are a part of groups or cliques, as they are called, that prepare for months for the street parades and practice playing the Piccolo and other instruments in the cellars of the city. Only they are allowed to wear fancy costumes during the Carnival, and are extremely serious about the ways and traditions of the festival.
So, one evening, as I left for home from work, I could hear lots of noise and music being played somewhere nearby. Ahaa, Petersplatz, it must be! I decided on visiting the park and taking a look around. Apparently, a clique was taking a break and all its members were either resting or eating. As I walked into the park, I was surprised to see the carpet of confetti that had been formed! I also spotted quite a few kids in costumes, playing around. ‘How adorable!’, I thought to myself, and started walking towards one of the kids, smiling at him, and hoping to take a picture. The kid did not smile back, but stared at me for a while. As I stood still and focussed on taking some pictures of the park und so weiter, I realized that some kids were walking towards me from various directions.
Not knowing what else to do, I smiled at them again. A few moments later, they had surrounded me and suddenly started stuffing my clothes with confetti! Wait, what!!I was surprised, but tried to calm down. Oh yes, it is a tradition indeed!I wasn’t wearing a badge. Let the kids have some fun! So, I let them shove the confetti on me, thinking they would just stop in a minute or so. But, how wrong could I be! The kids who I had perceived to be innocent and adorable, had packets of confetti with them and just did NOT want to stop. ‘Okay now, enough already!’, I told them and motioned for them to stop, still maintaining my polite tone.
I did get away from them a few moments later, trying to shake off the confetti from my jacket and hair. I continued doing so, until I reached home, some 400 metres away, and on reaching my room, realized what a confetti trail I had left behind in the corridors!
The biggest surprised awaited me after I took off my jacket near the balcony: when I was instantly surrounded by a sea of confetti.ALL my clothes were full of these tiny paper bits, that also stuck to my body and seemed to be very difficult to get rid of.
My struggle with getting rid of these bits went on for along time, but I did learn NOT to wait and smile at people during the madness of the Carnival. Later in the evening and the day after, I did go exploring the madness in the city with my friends, and escaped confetti attacks by adults.
STREET FOOD DURING BASEL FASNACHT
That was the first time I tried out Käsewähe and Zweibelwähe, popular food items served during the Fasnacht (apart from Mehlsuppe). I also went cellar hopping with my friends and saw several performances by cliques (Schnitzelbank), satirizing politics or recent events, while showing illustrations. Unfortunately for me, I could not even understand one bit of what they recited or said, even though they were distributing their verses to everyone in the room. The reason: Yes, it was in Deutsch, but looked far different from what a beginner learns or hears! To me, it seemed to resemble Dutch more than German! They stick to the original Basel dialect while performing, which is so difficult for an outsider to understand. Nevertheless, their energy, performance, illustrations, preparations(and masks) were all worth it.
